The Saint Bernard

This breed is descended from Roman Molossians of the 2nd century A.D. Saint Bernards are named after Bernard de Menthon, the founder of a famous hospice built in a remote alpine pass in Switzwerland 1000 years ago to shelter mountain travelers. These dogs also showed an unusual ability to detect approaching avalanches.

Saint Bernards are gentle and affectionate and reliable and are generally good with other animals and children, in spite of its size, but they need to be introduced with them at an early age. Bear in mind that an unruly dog of this size can be hard to handle even for a strong adult. They must be socialized and enrolled in obedience classes early.

Their great size and ominous bark is enough to deter intruders. Avoid aggressive games. Some Saint Bernards are heavy droolers. Both varieties need brushing once a week. Getting them to exercise is sometimes difficult. It is best not to allow puppies too much activity at one time until the bones are well-formed and strong. Short walks and bried play sessions are best until the dog is grown up. These dogs are prone to ploat so it is best to feed them two or three small meals a day instead of one large meal.

Height: 25-30 inches
Weight: 110-200 lbs.
Life Span: 8-10 yrs.
