The Shiba Inu The Shiba is the smallest of the Japanese native breeds and the most popular in Japan. The Shiba Inu is an ancient Japanese breed developed for hunting birds and small game more than 2,000 years ago. The breed is a result of the interbreeding of three ancient breeds: the Sanin, the Mino, and the Shinshu. Intelligent, independant, alert and agile, they are also excellent watchdogs and companions. They can be aloof and reserved with strangers as well as their families, but will accept children and other dogs and cats if raised with them. Shiba Inus need early obedience training to control their attempts to dominate. They need to be brushed two or three times a week. They need daily walks or romps in a safe, secure area.
