The shar-pei was developed in China over 2,000 years ago for hunting and dogfighting.

The Shap-pei is alert, intelligent, independent, but extremly devoted to his family and makes delightful companion. They are protective of their territory, and wary of human and animal strangers, so they make good watchdogs. Socialization and obedience classes at an early age are is important. The shar-pei does best with respectful children at least five years old.

The loose skin, small ears, thick rounded muzzle, and curled high-set tail are distinctive of this breed. The shar-pei needs daily walks on a leash or a run in a secured area.
