The Samoyed

The Samoyed is an ancient breed member of the spitz family. It was named for the Samoyed tribe of Siberia, where it herded reindeer, and was used as a sled dog.

The Samoyed is to friendly to be a guard dog, but its bark will alert you to the presence of strangers. Samoyeds are charming, intelligent family companions and are very good with children and other animals and not aggressive with strangers.

They can be stubborn and independent and difficult to train, so early obedience training is recommended. Samoyeds must be included in family activities or they will become destructive. These dogs like to bark so this is they way they communicate when they are happy, sad, nervous, or isolated.

Samoyeds need to be brushed two to three times a week, daily when shedding. They require good daily exercise. They are prone to hip dysplasia so it is especially important to buy this dog from a reputable breeder who can show you the hip certificate for both parents.

Height: 27-33 inches
Weight: 175-190 lbs.
Life Span: 8-10 yrs.
