The Pekingese

The Pekingese is an ancient breed and is known as the Lion Dog of China. They were favorite of the Chinese Imperial Court for centuries. In 18th-century in China, stealing a Pekingese was punishable by death.

They are playful, loyal and couragous and even if they are small they make excellent watchdogs and are good alarm barkers. Some are stubborn and independent, making obedience training a difficult.

They are weary of strangers and do well with children as long as they are treated with respect. They get along well with cats but may be aggresive with other dogs.

Pekingese are well suited for apartment life, especially with an adult household. They need to be brushed daily. Pekingese are disinclined to take walks and they don't need much exercice, but they will benefit from play activities.
