The Fox Terrier (smooth)

The fox terrier, both the smooth and wirehaired, was developed in England in the 18th century for driving foxes out from their dens. These fearless hunters would dig, crawl, and squirm their way into a fox hole and attack until the fox would get out of its den.

The Fox terrier loyalty and devotion to his family is legendary. They are alert and fun-loving, gets along with children over about five years old if treated with respect. They can adapt well to the city or the country.

Cats and other animals can be a problem and they need to be raised with them. Obedience training and socialization must begin at an early age. Without training, they may also develop some behavioral problems, such as excessive barking, hole digging, or possessiveness with their toys or food. Aggressive games should not be played with Fox terriers.

The wirehaired should be brushed twice a week. The smooth needs only a short brushing once a week. Fox terriers are extremely energetic and need good daily exercise and play.
