The Bloodhound

The Bloodhound trace his ancestry directly to eight-century Belgium, and he is also known as the Flemish Hound. The bloodhound has been known since ancient times, and many of today's scent hounds are descended from bloodhound ancestors.

The Bloodhound is large and powerfull, but he is sensitive and gentle. He is very powerful, and stands over more ground than is usual with hounds of other breeds. The skin is thin to the touch and extremely loose, this being more especially noticeable about the head and neck, where it hangs in deep folds.

The Bloodhound is extremely affectionate with people, neither quarrelsome with other animals nor with other dogs. His nature is somewhat shy, and equally sensitive to kindness or correction by his master. There is no comparable dog when it comes to cold scent-tracking. They bark deeply when strangers approach their territory but are actually very friendly.

Bloodhounds need a weekly brushing and ear cleaning. They need a lot of exercise, such as long daily walks. This powerful dog must always be walked on a leash or it will follow a scent rather than its owner.

Height: 23-27 inches
Weight: 80-110 lbs.
Life Span: 10-12 yrs.
