The Akita

This breed is native to the Japanese Islands. In outline they resemble the Chow Chow of China except for their coats, which are short to medium-long haired. In order of size the Shiba is the smallest; the Sanshu is the medium sized, and the largest is the Shishu Inu or Akita Inu, the latter being the best known of the Japanese dogs.

In Japan it is now classified along with the guard and police dog breeds, not as a hunting breed. Highly esteemed in its country of origin, the Akita is now regarded as one of Japan's natural treasures and has been named that country's national dog.

Alert and responsive, courageous, sometime dominant. The Akita can be aggressive toward other dogs.

Height: 24-28 inches
Weight: 75-110 lbs.
Life Span: 10-12 yrs.
