The affenpinscher is a toy breed of German origin whose ancestry is unknown. In France the breed is sometimes called the Diablotin moustachu, or "Moustached Little Devil." For it is a fact that both the Affenpinscher's moustache and chin whiskers contribute to his mischievous expression. The breed is claimed to be a progenitor of both the Miniature Schnauzer and the Brussels Griffon.

The general temperament of the Affenpinscher is alert and inquisitive with great loyalty and affection toward its master and friends. The breed is generally quiet but can become vehemently excited when threatened or attacked and is fearless toward any aggressor.
