The Bengal Cat

The Bengal cat is a domestic cat breed that first originated from crossings of the small Asian leopard cat to the domestic house cat. Thus, after at least four generations of Bengal to Bengal breeding (SBT generation), they are a breed of medium to large house cats with a wild look but the domestic temperament.

Bengals are registered and shown in most domestic cat associations. Since the original purpose in breeding Bengal cats was to try to approximate the look of the exotic spotted leopard cat, the spotted pattern is still the most common. However, there is also a marble pattern, created by one or more colors swirled into the base coat.

The personality of a Bengal cat can best be described as happy, active, and extremely intelligent. While they'll happily search out a lap or stretch out on the sofa next to you when it's time to nap, they are an active cat when they're awake. Whether it's playing in their waterbowls or fetching balls for their owners, Bengals are on the move and are perfect for adults or children who want to interact and play with a cat.

As is the case with all breeds of cats, if you are looking for a pet kitten, it is important to find reputable breeders who spend time socializing their kittens. Beware of any breeder who sells kittens not registered with a major cat association or refuses to use contracts and health guarantees when placing their kittens.*
